It’s been a while since we’ve had an algorithm or user experience update from the social media leaders, Facebook and Instagram. The latest update, announced on 1st August, aims to really focus the users mind.

Are you guilty of endless scrolling?

The first part of their update focuses on time management – do you know how long you spend endlessly scrolling through the popular platforms? Probably a whole lot more time than you realised. And you’re not alone. A recent study found that 18-24 year olds spend 3 hours and 14 minutes scrolling PER DAY. That’s insane. And when you think about it, not actually hard to rack up. So, the most recent update has a function whereby you can set a time limit on how long you spend on these two platforms. 

Ameet Ranadive, Product Management Director at Instagram and David Ginsberg, Director of Research at Facebook, explain further: “We developed these tools based on collaboration and inspiration from leading mental health experts and organisations, academics, our own extensive research and feedback from our community.”

They’re not trying to keep you off the platforms – they’re trying to ensure the time you spend on them is valuable and of a positive experience.

Constant notifications driving you crazy?

Another update just released is the muting of notifications for anywhere from 15 minutes to 8 hours – a valuable option if you’re working to a deadline. I’ll admit, I have certain notifications switched off otherwise my phone is going off literally every 5 minutes! That’s not so ideal for productivity!

To poll or not to poll?

Have you used the polling option on Instagram stories? Up until now, only yes or no answers have been valid, but open-ended answers are coming! Hurrah! This will give you an even better experience for your customers who can perhaps explain further about products or services they want to see from you, helping you to create that perfect B2C relationship.

Hashtagging – how do you use it?

Hashtags have always been a key part of growing your audience on Instagram. The number you can share is currently 30, but is due to drop to just 11 in a bid to fine tune the number of hashtags on the platform. So my advice to you would be to share fine-tuning so when the changes fall into place you’ll have 11 perfectly precise hashtags to use for your business.

Is social media still so influential?

The answer is of course, yes. Instagram has an incredibly 800million+ users – a figure that keeps on growing. More people are using the app to research products and services than ever before.
