Alison Edgar is one of the most inspiring entrepreneurs the business world has to be offer. After 25 extremely successful years in Sales, it was after a call to a friend that she realised her future involved training business owners to sell in her similarly successful style.
“I love working with people,” Alison explains. “I used to work in hospitality and have worked and lived in and Sydney, Cape Town and the Channel Islands. Upon returning to Scotland in 1992, I met my husband, who had a job working 9-5 Monday to Friday. So I followed suit and started to do the same.”
Fast forward 25 years and Alison found herself working for Yellow Pages, at a time when the publication started to deteriorate. “I can’t sell something I don’t believe in, so I decided to think of other options.”
Since setting up her own business, Sales Coaching Solutions, in 2011, her achievements include being named one of the UKs Top 10 Advisers, one of the UKs Most Influential Entrepreneurs and being the Guardian’s Small Business Showcase Leader of the Year among many others.
“I won GB Entrepreneur of the Year: Special Merit for Service Award in 2015 and was invited to the Queen’s Royal Garden Party for my dedication to Enterprise. I even went to Downing Street!”
Meanwhile in the same year, the Government withdrew the Growth Accelerator and Voucher Schemes, both of which had previously helped 26,000 small and start up businesses to achieve their potential. At this time, Alison read a Forbes statistic which stated that 90% of businesses fail in their first year. “I knew it was going to get tougher for small businesses to access the training they need to survive and grow and I realised something had to be done, so The Entrepreneur’s Godmother was born in May 2016. “I love working with younger people – they inspire me and keep me young!” Alison says. “Hence being the Godmother!”
Having grown to be a household name for the entrepreneur, Alison’s vision is succinct, she wants to be the Adele of the sales world. And she’s certainly going the right way about. With an incredibly successful business behind her, a talented team around her and a list of business owners wanting to work with her, Alison now believes that PR has truly helped with her success.
“When I started the sales training, I honestly didn’t know what PR was, like a lot of business owners. My ethos focused on brand building, in a similar way PR does. I know I’m not the only sales trainer in the world, but I wanted to be the one people choose. If you have a Cadbury’s chocolate bar or an unbranded one, you go for the Cadbury’s. I’ve always wanted to be a high profile person as people are then more likely to work with me.”
If you’re looking to set up your own business, Alison has two top tips. “If you don’t sell, you don’t have a business. People often think marketing the holy grail, but you have to be proactive to survive. That’s the key to success.”
Alison’s results speak for themselves. PR has helped to get her to the position she’s in now, whereby she can provide a living for herself which is comfortable, enjoyable and most of all, successful. She’s an inspiration to business owners worldwide.
