How much do you know about Wi-Fi and the internet? Did you know that they are actually totally different things, even though people tend to use the terms interchangeably? Here, our favourite IT specialists Black Nova Designs take a closer look at the difference between the two and look at how speaking to a Wi-Fi specialist could help your equestrian business thrive.
What is Wi-Fi?
To help you understand the difference, let’s look at this in the context of your home internet. Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is usually contracted to get the internet to your premises but anything beyond that master socket (the telephone socket in the wall) is where their obligation ends. They will normally provide you with a simple router, which uses wireless networking technology (Wi-Fi!) to send and receive signals from nearby devices. Those devices might include computers, game consoles, phones, laptops and even house alarms. That means they fulfil their contract to supply you with internet access and give you a means to connect devices to it. But if you have problems with Wi-Fi beyond your router, you’re on your own.
So why do some people struggle with Wi-Fi access in their homes or places of work? Well, as a society our demands on our Wi-Fi are getting ever higher. We rely on the internet for so much (think ordering food, shopping, watching Netflix, scrolling social media…. it’s endless!) and we need a consistently strong Wi-Fi signal for it all to work. Plus, one little simple router isn’t always powerful enough to do everything. That’s especially true in homes with a big footprint or where there are lots of users. The same goes for equestrian businesses too! One router in the in office might not help the internet reach smartphones in a barn hundreds of feet away. That means if you want great Wi-Fi at your equestrian business, you might need some expert help!
Helping Wi-Fi go further
If you search online for ways to improve your Wi-Fi, you’ll find articles talking about products which can extend or boost your signal. Here at Black Nova Designs we would strongly advise you not to go down that route. We’ve seen people try that and still have to call on us to help anyway! A Wi-Fi booster will simply amplify the output of your router so if that device is struggling with demand, the booster won’t help. Thankfully, there is another way to make sure you have strong, reliable wireless access.
