A website is an excellent sales and marketing tool and it’s time to ask yourself if it is working hard for you. The stats from the spring lockdown showed people rapidly turned to online shopping and services, scrolling and browsing with all that extra time. With a little bit of effort, you can make sure your website is easier to find and works hard for you, making it an enviable lead generation tool.

You’ve already invested time and money in it, so make sure you’re getting the best possible return on that investment. Whether you liaised with specialists or worked on it yourself, you’ve gone to all that effort to pull together branding, images and copy for your website and made it look amazing.

Check your website is mobile-optimised
Ever pull up a website on a mobile and it looks tiny and zoomed out? Or buttons aren’t click-able, and images look strange? That’s probably because it isn’t optimised for viewing on all devices. A mobile optimised website will display properly on a smartphone or tablet as well as a computer screen or laptop. It’s important because the split between people browsing the internet on a smartphone and laptop is now around 50/50. If your website isn’t mobile optimised it won’t display properly to people on phones or tablets. That’s now going to be around half your visitors (or more depending on your sector!).
Is there a link to it from your social media feeds?
This one sounds oh so simple but it’s worth mentioning! Check your social media profiles and check they all have a working and up to date website link. For avid Instagram users there are ways to make more of the ‘link in bio’ with a Linktree page. Or you can have a page on your own website with a list of content to link to, if you prefer – just drop us a line to find out more about that. Finally, make sure the website address on business cards and any other marketing collateral is right too.
Have you checked everything on your website is working?
How many times have you gone on a website and an image doesn’t load? Or maybe you’ve taken the time to fill in a form then when you press ‘submit’ nothing seems to happen. It’s your job to check your website works properly, especially if you’re selling goods on it. Make a test purchase and check the forms all work properly – and do it regularly. How much would a week of your website not working actually cost you?
Get blogging to keep your content current
Blogging isn’t just a way to get your latest news and views out there… It’s also a good way to make your website rank a little higher as Google and other search engines will re-crawl your website to find new content to index. You can also refresh the copy on your ‘about’ or ‘services’ pages periodically, making sure to include keywords as much as you can without making it sound strange or rendering it totally unreadable…
Collaborate with other businesses
Consider approaching other businesses to work with you, promoting each other’s businesses to your followers and customers. For example, a bookkeeper working with small rural businesses might form a collaborative network with a website designer, graphic designer, virtual assistant, photographer, business coach and social media expert, all offering things that a small business owner might need. Make sure you include links to the different websites to help boost traffic.
Nail some SEO basics
Another tool to drive more visitors to your website and build more backlinks (another SEO-friendly move which Google adores…) is to place guest blogs on other people’s websites. You could use a network like the one detailed above to place useful blogs on each other’s websites or offer specialist blogs out to the wider world.
