Our friends over at Black Nova Designs share how you can stay safe online and protect yourself from cyber-attacks in this guest blog!
How has the Covid-19 pandemic affected your life? Has it changed how and where you work, how you do your food shopping and even how you socialise? The chances are it has and, even as we look forward to life opening up a little more in the coming weeks (fingers firmly crossed!), many of those changes look set to stick around for a while yet. One of the reasons we’ve all been able to work, shop and stay connected over the past 18 months is thanks to the internet. Just imagine if the Covid-19 pandemic had happened in 1999?! The impact on our daily lives would have been so very different. Luckily, in 2020 (and now 2021!) remote working, online shopping and ‘Zoom pubs’ all kept life ticking over while lockdown measures were in place.
Spending more time online? Your risk of cyber-attacks goes up!
That means that online security is more important than ever before. More time browsing and chatting on the internet means a higher risk of falling victim to a cyber-attack. And, just as we’re spending more and more time online, so too are the people who use the internet to steal, disrupt and defraud people just like you and me. There are some steps you can take to ensure you stay safe online and don’t fall victim to cyber-attacks. We did a blog all about them earlier this year which you can read here – but there is a way to add an extra layer of protection.
Here’s why you might need it – did you know that Google Play Store removes malware when it finds it? That sounds good, right? They take it away! But whereas the App Store from Apple has a thorough vetting process to stop malware ever making onto their platform, Google Play just mops it up when it finds it. That means you could be at risk! There are numerous social media scams or pop ups on websites which you really don’t want to get tangled up in!
All it takes is one mistake…
Plus, as we mentioned before, there are a lot of ‘classic’ scams still out there. You may have heard about phishing scams and know not to click on a link in an email which looks dodgy. But here’s the problem – everyone makes a mistake once in a while. If you’ve been busy replying to emails or sending orders, it’s easy to accidentally open an email and click a link. That then installs malware, such as viruses, spyware or ransomware, on your device without you even knowing it. If that happens to you, disconnect from the internet, and scan your devices using antivirus software. But if you don’t know it’s even happened, you become very vulnerable to a cyber-attack. Anything private saved on your computer or smartphone – personal information, online banking, business data – is at risk of being shared among cyber criminals.
Take a proactive approach
But what about if you’ve taken a proactive approach and have antivirus software already installed on your devices? Not only does it mean you’ll be protected from cyber threats even if you don’t know you’ve clicked a link, but it also automatically updates with the latest version. That means your devices are regularly checked for even the latest viruses and threats. Or maybe you think that by using a MacBook or iMac you’re protected? Sadly, the idea that Apple products are immune from viruses just isn’t true. In fact, the very first virus ever found was actually found… on a Mac! So even if you love working on a Mac you do still need to stay safe from cyber-attacks.
