The importance of setting goals in business

 In Blog, Uncategorized

Setting goals might seem like an obvious task within business, but do you actually do it and keep yourself accountable? I’ll admit – until I started working with a business coach, I didn’t. I would bumble along and take each month as it came. I knew how much I needed to earn to pay my bills and have some money at the end, but I didn’t set income targets.

“Fail to plan, you plan to fail.”

As soon as I started working with my coach, Linda Davies-Carr, The Master Fixer, I started setting goals with her. We’d set monthly goals, client goals (those I really wanted to work with) and longer term goals. Goals that really scared me. In having regular sessions with her, I was able to keep track of those goals and ensure I was working towards them. I have them written down – my major one that scares me is written in pink on my desk. It’s subtly in my line of sight so I see it every day. Every time I’m at my laptop it’s in the corner of my eye. Having it there to see keeps it at the forefront of my mind. It keeps my hunger for it and keeps me driving towards it.

The point here is, if you don’t set goals, you’ll keep ‘bumbling along’ without any real drive. Setting those goals, writing down a figure that scares you and having something to actually work towards will work wonders for you. It’s in our nature as competitive humans to want to smash that goal, and keep growing the business.

Once you have those goals, it’s essential to make a plan. How are you going to achieve them? What will your steps be? These are dependant entirely on your goals and your business. For me, if my goal is a certain number of new clients, I’ll create a plan as to how I’ll attract those clients. What sets me out from the crowd? How can I make people want to work with me? Having that strategic plan

“A goal without a plan is just a wish.”

Having clearly defined goals and a plan will increase your chances of success. Having someone that you are accountable to helps increase those chances even more. You’ve put a lot of work and effort into this business – don’t let it fail because you hadn’t set goals. Set them, then smash them.
