Behind the brand with Pegasus Jewellery
Pegasus Jewellery was launched in 2015 after a visit to the Blair Castle FEI Horse Trials sparked a passion. I caught up with founder, Kim Wilson, to hear of the inspiration behind the brand, where the name came from and what makes the much loved brand so special and unique.
What triggered your interest in jewellery?
Jewellery is all I have ever known. My Great Grandfather opened Monaghans Jewellers in 1909, in a small village called Dalbeattie, it was passed on through my Grandfather, Dad and now my Brother. The business is now in Dumfries and completely different as a branded destination Jewellers, but the family roots are firmly in jewellery and clocks. As a little girl I loved playing in my Mum’s jewellery box and have always had an eye for sparkly things.
Why did you decide to launch Pegasus Jewellery?
I had toyed with the idea of launching my own jewellery collection for years, but after a visit to Blair Castle FEI International Horse Trials in 2015, I realised I should use Horses as my inspiration. Use my knowledge of current trends in the jewellery world and combine with an equine twist. Horses have always been a huge part of my life and we have a lead rein show pony for my daughter, so it was a kind of ‘eureka’ moment.
As soon as I got home I was hauling out tack and bits for inspiration and got my first designs down on paper.
What was the first piece you designed and launched?
I designed the core range of 30 pieces together, but the piece I remember designing was the pearl horseshoe earrings. Pearl studs are so classic, and I wanted to make them modern and combine the equestrian theme, so adding a sparkly horseshoe and set with a pearl encapsulated everything I wanted Pegasus the brand to be: classy combined with the modern and the equestrian. At the beginning I spent endless nights designing at my kitchen table after the kids were in bed.
What inspired the name, Pegasus Jewellery?
I had originally planned to call the range of jewellery COLT, short, snappy and obviously equine. However I was sitting one evening reading my daughter a bedtime story from the Usborne book of Mythical characters. The story was about Pegasus the beautiful winged horse who sprang from the body of Medusa. After reading it Charlotte said “Mummy that would be a good name for your jewellery” and it just felt right. And with Pegasus I hoped all my dreams and aspirations would take flight.
What makes Pegasus really special and unique?
The love and passion that goes into designing every piece. I always wanted Pegasus to be an affordable brand but of excellent quality. Horse lovers have enough expense I wanted everyone to wear something special to show their love of all that is equine. When I look at a piece I always have a memory or story as to where the inspiration for that piece came from.
What’s your favourite every day piece?
The Vitality bracelet! Gives me strength and stamina to get through the day; working full time with Pegasus, looking after two children, two ponies and a beagle! Boosts my energy, improves my sleep and I no longer have to take endless painkillers for shoulder. Little miracle.
What’s the one thing people don’t know about you?
I am desperate for a mini Datchund pup which I would call Bessie!
