Social Media, it’s not a numbers game
These past few weeks I have been intrigued and really rather astonished by the behaviours of some accounts across their social media pages.
Several times now I have had accounts follow me, then unfollow me, to then follow me again the following day. One account, a male PR “guru” (was clearly just an ego account) did this more than 30 times over the space of 5 weeks. It was obviously his strategy to get me to follow him back, which I of course didn’t. In the end, I messaged him asking him to stop following and unfollowing me and went to say that if that was his plan to get more followers then his social media strategy really needed some work. He was then blocked.
This causes me to think that many people believe that follower numbers is the most important thing. This isn’t the case. What’s the point in having 10,000 followers if none of them are customers or can help, support or benefit from your business. 1,000 followers who are a mix of business owners, customers and industry experts will result in a much more successful and profitable business. Instagram is all about quality not quantity. I regularly post pictures on Instagram that are business related and have specific hashtags to match. This often results in between 5 and 10 new followers, all of whom will unfollow me as soon as I follow them back. So I’ve stopped following them back.
Like many business owners I only have a certain amount of time in my day in which to ‘do’ social media. So I now focus on making contacts that are worthy for me and my business. If I sit at 1,200 likes on Instagram, that’s fine with me, because I know those 1,200 are accounts I’ve interacted with, worked on and actually wish to share my life and my business with. Don’t get hooked on the numbers game, it really isn’t what it’s all about.
