“You won’t want to put it down – 5*” – How To Get Your Leg Over by Victoria Brant
How to get your leg over, by Victoria Brant.
“How to get your leg over”
This book sticks true to it’s title. It really is about getting your leg over. Over the horse, onto the saddle and on with the journey of horse ownership. The first in hopefully a succession of titles, part one really gives you the insight into author, Victoria Brant, the owner of the much loved blog ‘Diary of a Wimpy Eventer.’
What did I like about the book?
Everything, literally everything. In fact, I loved it. From the second I picked this book up, I couldn’t put it down. I read the first 60 pages without even taking a breather. It was one of those glorious Summer evenings and I sat in the garden, listening to the birds tweeting, totally absorbed by what I was reading. Victoria’s style of writing and explanations of certain situations really draw on your imagination. It almost feels like you’re experiencing those scenarios with her. You long for her to find the answer, to get success and to complete that first BE event.
At times, you just wanted to give her a hug, a leg up and a pat on the back. You also wanted to join her for the celebrations once she achieved her goals. The story certainly kept you guessing and kept you intrigued as you wished for her happiness and success. One of my favourite parts was where Vic mentioned that she had no pictures of herself smiling at a competition. If you’ve seen the Diary of a Wimpy Eventer social media accounts lately, you’ll know that’s all she posts now! Which is what it’s all about; having fun, enjoying life and loving what you do with your horse.
On a more personal level, I’m hoping to start Eventing my own horse this Summer. He’s an exracehorse so it’ll be his first One Day Event EVER and my first in about 8 or 9 years. The fear factor has certainly increased in that time I’ve had away from competing so I’ll be sure to take some of Vic’s advice on board when I’m preparing for our first event. I don’t want to let my horse down!
My only dislike?
That it wasn’t longer! I’d have been gripped throughout if it was ten times as long.
This book isn’t just for the horse rider. At some point in all of our lives, we’ve faced fear. Whether from a professional or a personal point of view, the fear of failure and the fear of disappointment is all too prevalent in our daily lives. Particularly as we compare ourselves to others on social media, look up to celebrities and are under constant scrutiny from followers.
As Vic would say, “surround yourself with people that either couldn’t give a sh*t, ones that would give their last sh*t to see you succeed, or the ones that don’t know what sh*t you’re doing.”
I guarantee, whether a horse rider, a business owner or a happy go lucky individual, you’ll be addicted to this book. The very best book I’ve read in a very long time. 5* from start to finish.
