Cotswolds Food Review: The Kingham Plough

 In Blog

Nestled in the picturesque Cotswolds village of Kingham, once voted the ‘best village in Britain’ and just 5 miles from gorgeous Stow on the Wold, you’ll find The Kingham Plough. One of the most delightful establishments in The Cotswolds (and we’ve certainly tried quite a few!)

– The experience –

Overlooking the village green, which was once host to the Great British Bake Off, you’ll find this magical establishment. The Cotswold stone pub just entices you in. A warm atmosphere and delightful welcoming staff members greet you as you enter the bar. The area features two gorgeous fireplaces, a life size statue Pig (yes, really) and Cotswold stone walling present throughout, an essential feature in this idyllic sought after area. Head into the dining room and you’ll find yourself overwhelmed by the character and charm of this sensational space, with its’ magnificent pheasant wallpaper and feature beams.

The menu and wine list are indescribably superb. They’re as close to perfection as you’re going to get.

– The food –

Visiting on a Sunday, we just had to try the Roast Beef. The meat, which comes from a local butcher, was cooked to perfection (rare, of course.) It was perfectly tender, each bite melting in the mouth. Every roast potato had the perfect ratio of crisp outer layer to fluffy interior. The vegetables are from nearby Daylesford Organic farm shop and are equally divine. Venison is also available as a roast, a really nice change. Admittedly, it’s on the more expensive side of normal (£22 for the Roast Beef) but you really do get what you pay for. And you’re paying for perfection, on which you can’t put a price.

The menu doesn’t disappoint midweek either. For a real foodie, the Cornbury Park Venison Wellington is a must. Rich, succulent Venison (again, cooked rare) is wrapped in flaky pastry and served with a rich jus, Daylesford Pumpkins and Braised Red Cabbage; a real favourite. Again, the meal was faultless. We also sampled the Beef and Ale Pie, another perfected classic. There are also a tempting selection of vegetarian and fish dishes, offering something for everyone. Finish off with a sweet treat (again, you’re spoilt for choice), a dessert wine (it’s a shame not to when you’re here) or the cheese board, with no less than 9 cheeses on offer. And yes, you can have them all, for just £19

15152966_10154759371570701_1107380145_oOwners Emily and Miles have had this pub since 2007. Their passion comes across in every aspect of the business. Their love of good food is evident throughout, providing with guests with an unforgettable experience. You’d even agree if you popped in for a half and to read the paper on a cold Wintery lunchtime. Before you even get up from your table, you’re left wanting to return. It really is sensational.

– The return –

This pub manages to offer Michelin-standard food with an impeccable wine list, in comfy Cotswolds surroundings. If that wasn’t enough, the service is also exquisite. You just can’t fault it. And why would you want to, it’s perfection. The gorgeous village also has it’s own train station with direct trains to and from London. So there’s just no excuses, get booking..
